Gout, the Pain Is Real - Youtube Short

Image
The past three weeks have been overshadowed by gout, which culminated in a trip to A and E on Christmas day with a urate level  of 585 umol/l and a big toe on fire! After taking 4 of the half dose Naproxen tablets that my GP gave me, and asking if it would be okay for my kidneys, I decided to stop that! Of course that meant the gout came back with a vengeance and so its feet up and cocodamol for two weeks. I decided to make a Youtube short, Enjoy!

PTH and Vitamin D - Reddit Q and A

Image
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. I am a kidney disease patient who has researched for my life.  U/lmourr asks: My Response: My PTH was high. It's due to Secondary hyperparathyroidism (long word haha). Active vitamin D prescription has dropped my numbers from 28.8 pmol/l to 3.5 pmol/l. It happens when damaged kidneys don't activate enough of the D3 the you produce from the sun or buy at the shop. This means you are not absorbing enough calcium from the guts, your pth rises to encourage more absorption, but without enough active D this doesn't happen and your bones get robbed of their calcium and you can end up with renal bone disease if not treated.  Nephrologists prescribe active vitamin D like Alfacalcidiol to replace what can't be made. Interesting to note that Secondary hyperparathyroidism (unlike primary hyperparathyroidism which it not caused by ckd) shows normal levels of calcium. Check out this video from Youtube that has a detailed explanation of seco...

3 Monthly Update

Image
Welcome to the latest update! Today I had the 3 monthly call from my nephrologist.  I am always nervous before he calls, worrying he might think I am waffling on but now its over I am feeling reassured even though he also said I have a least a decade before complete failure, I want more time 😂. He has a way of explaining things and today I felt heard. One week before the call I will get my bloods. Here are the concerning results this time around: Gfr 27 Calcium 2.64 mmol/l Epo 7.6 iu/l Calcium I was told is nothing to worry about so I will keep taking the active D.  Until my haemoglobin dips to 100 I will gain no benefit from epo injections, at least I have a number to focus on. Grf... well it's rubbish isnt it?! But I am told it is going down slowly and as I said previously I have about a decade, which always makes 10 years sound longer, until I potentially reach full failure! I will be trying a new Bp Med called Ramipril. See my other post about experience with ...

Sartans, Side Effects and My CKD Journey

Image
Hi everyone, where ever you are in the world! This is a post about blood pressure medication, specifically  Sartans . Have you ever taken blood pressure medication with the name ending 'sartan'? There are many sartans including Candesartan, Losartan, and Olmesartan, which I have taken myself. Nephrologists like their patients to take this type of blood pressure medication for 2 reasons that I am aware of. They lower blood pressure but also they help reduce proteinuria, aka albuminuria, which is common in people with CKD.  I shied away from taking sartans and stuck with the Labetalol I had been prescribed during pregnancy (the first time I ever needed blood pressure medication). That was until my Dad died of a heart attack. He died at home and I immediately set off on the 60 mile journey by train to see him before he was taken away by the silver van waiting outside. When I got there his medication was on the bed by his feet. It was a poignant moment reminding me how...
