PTH and Vitamin D - Reddit Q and A
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. I am a kidney disease patient who has researched for my life. U/lmourr asks: My Response: My PTH was high. It's due to Secondary hyperparathyroidism (long word haha). Active vitamin D prescription has dropped my numbers from 28.8 pmol/l to 3.5 pmol/l. It happens when damaged kidneys don't activate enough of the D3 the you produce from the sun or buy at the shop. This means you are not absorbing enough calcium from the guts, your pth rises to encourage more absorption, but without enough active D this doesn't happen and your bones get robbed of their calcium and you can end up with renal bone disease if not treated. Nephrologists prescribe active vitamin D like Alfacalcidiol to replace what can't be made. Interesting to note that Secondary hyperparathyroidism (unlike primary hyperparathyroidism which it not caused by ckd) shows normal levels of calcium.
